 According to the legend, Tanah Lot was constructed by Hindu Saint Dang Hyang Nirartha who, while meditating, pushed the rock into the water with the power of his mind. Nirartha had been led to the area by the celestial light but when he started preaching to the people of the town, the local priest got jealous and kicked him off the island. In response, Nirartha pushed a rock into the ocean and created the most beautiful temple of the island. The legend states that the Temple stands to protect the island.

Due to the Temple’s placement in the sea, it is only accessible during low tide. Regardless of when you visit, you will be able to admire the magnificent structure of the temple that is particularly beautiful at dawn when the shadows play in the water in the setting sun.

The area near the Temple is also unique. The local beaches house black sand, and there are plenty of cozy restaurants to enjoy your time by Tanah Lot.
